LAS ANALFABETAS (Illiterate) – September 6, 2014
Chile, 2013, 73 min, – Directed by: Moisés Sepúlveda - Cast: Paulina García, Valentina Muhr


Sinopsis: Ximena es una cincuentona analfabeta que se ha inventado todo lo que no ha podido leer. Jackeline es una joven profesora de primaria, desempleada, que intenta convencer a Ximena que aprenda a leer. Persuadirla es casi imposible, hasta que encuentra una carta que Ximena ha guardado por años; el único tesoro que le dejó su padre al abandonarla. Así, ambas mujeres emprenden un viaje de aprendizaje donde descubren que hay muchas formas de ser analfabeta, y el no saber leer es sólo una de ellas.

Synopsis: Ximena, an illiterate woman in her fifties, has learned to live on her own to keep her illiteracy a secret. Jackeline, a young unemployed elementary school teacher, tries to convince Ximena to learn to read. Persuading her is almost impossible, till one day, Jackeline finds Ximena’s only treasure, a letter her father left when he abandoned her. Thus, the two women embark on a learning journey where they discover that there are many ways of being illiterate and not knowing how to read is just one of them.





LAS PAREDES HABLAN (Words Behind Walls) – September 13, 2014

Sinopsis: En este largometraje, la historia es narrada por el alma de una casa, Casa Espíritu, donde se vive el amor de Javier y María, un romance contrario a la voluntad de sus familias, rivales por el poder político y económico del país. La trama se desarrolla durante tres períodos claves de la historia de México, 1810, 1910, y 2010. Una emblemática colección de arte mexicano cambiará de manos con los vaivenes de la historia.

Synopsis: In this feature, the story is narrated by the soul of a house, Casa Espíritu, where the love of Javier and María takes place, against the wishes of their respective families, rivals in the political and economical power of the country. The story takes place during three key periods of Mexico’s history 1810, 1910, and 2010. An emblematic collection of Mexican art will change hands through these history periods.






FERMIN, LAS GLORIAS DEL TANGO (Fermín, Tango Glories) - September 20, 2014
Argentina, 2014 - 117 min. - Directed by: Hernán Findling, Oliver Kolker – Cast: Héctor Alterio, Antonella Costa, Gastón Pauls, Dalma Maradona


Sinopsis: El Dr. Ezequiel Kaufman entra a trabajar como médico en un neuropsiquiátrico. Entre sus pacientes descubrirá uno en particular, Fermín Turdera, que tiene como único familiar a su nieta Eva, criada por él. Internado por más de 10 años, Fermín reúne características peculiares no comprendidas por otros médicos. Ezequiel descubre que sólo se expresa a través de frases que ha escuchado en tangos. A partir de este descubrimiento y una intensa relación entre el psiquiatra y su paciente, Fermín revelará la gran época y costumbres de la Argentina de 1940, la relación con sus amigos más íntimos, los celos y traiciones y a Zulma Prando, su gran amor.

Synopsis: Dr. Ezequiel Kaufman goes to work to a neuropsychiatric hospital where one of his patients, Fermín Turdera catches his attention. He finds out that Fermin has been in the hospital for more than ten years, he only has one relative, his granddaughter Eva, whom he had raised, and that the only way Fermín expresses himself is through phrases of tango songs he recalls. This discovery will be the beginning of a close patient-doctor relationship. Fermín will recall the great Argentina of the 1940s, his closest friends, jealousy, treason, and Zulma his great love.




LA DISTANCIA MAS LARGA (The Longest Distance – September 27, 2014

Venezuela/Spain, 2013 – 113 min. – Directed by: Claudia Pinto – Cast: Carmen Elías, Omar Moya, Alec Whaite, Ivan Tamayo.


Sinopsis: Dos caras de un mismo país, una ciudad agresiva y caótica, y un paraíso con las montañas más antiguas del planeta. Dos protagonistas en momentos vitales opuestos. Y dos viajes temerarios, una aventura infantil que cruza un país entero, y un viaje sin retorno, pero libre y decidido. El destino vincula irremediablemente a una abuela y su nieto. Aunque no se conocen, forman parte de un círculo que no pueden romper. Todo se conjura para decirnos: sólo hay un destino, el que tú eliges.

Synopsis: Two sides of the same country: a chaotic and violent city contrasting against a natural paradise where the oldest mountains on the planet can be found. Two main characters that find each other at a crucial moment. Two fearless journeys, one that begins as a childlike adventure and ends up on the other side of the country and a one-way journey, free and determined. The same destiny will inevitably bond a woman with her grandson. Without knowing it they are part of an unbreakable family circle that deeply unites them. Everything comes together to tell us: there is only one destiny, the one you choose for yourself.




PRINCESAS ROJAS (Red Princesses) – October 4, 2014

Cost Rica/Nicaragua, 2013 – 100 min. – Directed by: Laura Astorga – Cast: Fernando Bolaños, Valeria Conejo, Aura Dinarte, Carol Sanabria


Sinopsis: Frontera de Nicaragua en los 80s. Claudia de 10 años de edad y su hermana menor, viven la experiencia de la lucha en las calles a través de las ventanas de su carro. Sus padres son activistas Sandinistas y aún cuando la familia está escapando hacia Costa Rica, la batalla continúa. Esta película se enfoca en el punto de vista de estas dos hermanas muy unidas que viven situaciones difíciles de sobrellevar y mucho menos de comprender a su corta edad. Una lucha revolucionaria vista a través de los ojos de dos niñas.

Synopsis: The Nicaraguan border in the eighties. Eleven-year-old Claudia and her younger sister experience the street fighting at first hand outside their car window. Their parents are Sandinista activists and, although the family is now escaping to neighboring Costa Rica, the struggle continues. The film focuses on the point of view of the two sisters, who are very close, as they learn more than they are able to cope with, but too little really to understand. A revolutionary struggle, seen through the eyes of children.

Films will be shown at the RIO Theatre – 7204 W. 80th Street (one block West of Metcalf Ave.) – Overland Park, Kansas – Tel. (913) 383-8500. Program starts at 11:00 o’clock. All films are in Spanish with English subtitles, unless otherwise indicated. The audience is invited to participate in the group discussions following each showing. For reasons out of our control, program may be subject to change.
